West Brom target Joe Rothwell set to sign for Bournemouth
West Brom target Joe Rothwell is “on the brink” of signing for Bournemouth where he was close to a move in January, Alex Crook reports.
The 27-year-old failed to agree a new deal at Ewood Park and left the club before attracting wide interest, including from Sheffield United, and Nottingham Forest.
But with Rothwell coming close to a move to the South coast club in the winter window they were always favourites to finally land their man.
talkSPORT reporter Crook has now confirmed that they are set to do so, writing on his personal Twitter account: “Six months after having a £2m bid rejected AFCB are on the brink of signing Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell as a free agent. Also working hard on other deals to strengthen the squad for Premier League return.”
The Albion boss had identified a strong target as he looks to strengthen his line-up this summer, but he appears to have always been fighting a losing battle.
Even if the Cherries had not secured Rothwell, newly-promoted Forest would have been armed with far more financial muscle to bring him in.
While some teams currently have the luxury of offering free agents extra in light of the saving they can make on the transfer fee, Bruce needs to chase free transfers out of necessity.
He pulled off quite a coup in the circumstances by bringing in ex-Reading man John Swift, but in many cases he is the underdog, as with Nixon’s most recent update on the Lenihan situation on Patreon which says that Middlesbrough are winning the race.
If he can’t do much more business then a lot of hopes are going to be pinned on the former Royals midfielder, as well as the hoped-for return to fitness for January signing Daryl Dike.
In other West Brom news, there is interest in a highly-rated Baggies youngster for a move this summer.
