West Brom beaten by Burnley to signing of Manchester City defender CJ Egan-Riley

West Brom have lost out in the race to sign Manchester City defender CJ Egan-Riley, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist has reported that Burnley will win the race for the permanent signing, with his ties at the Etihad Stadium clearly being put in use at Turf Moor.

Coventry were also said to be interested alongside the Baggies, but it was shared that Burnley made the first move ahead of both Championship rivals to seal a deal worth up to a potential £750,000.

Writing on his official Patreon account on Friday afternoon [24 June], Nixon shared the update as Steve Bruce will have to start looking elsewhere to bolster his defence.

“Burnley boss Vincent Kompany is signing Manchester City defender CJ Egan-Riley in a full-time deal,” he wrote.

“City will pick up £350,000 immediately with a further £400,000 on games and a chunky slice of any future sale.

“Burnley came in ahead of Coventry and West Brom for local boy Egan-Riley to seal a deal.”

Missed out.

These types of permanent bargains are the kind of deals that Ron Gourlay will be looking at this summer.

It was made very clear with the big push to secure Jed Wallace and John Swift on free transfers that the Baggies are looking to bring in brilliant options for a limited price.

This could have been another one of those, with City letting a young defender leave the Etihad for under £1million, something which may prove to be a smart investment.

It looks as though Burnley will have a lot more money to spend with their immediate parachute payments and the likes of Nick Pope leaving though.

The defence wasn’t in desperate need of strengthening though, so Bruce won’t be scratching his head too much with the priority likely being in midfield and another striker.

Knowing that Egan-Riley was being targeted though, this will be an interesting one to watch next season.
