Steve Bruce remains undecided about plans for West Brom starlet Josh Griffiths
West Brom manager Steve Bruce is yet to decide whether to send goalkeeper Josh Griffiths out on loan or whether to make him battle for the number one position at The Hawthorns, according to the Express & Star.
The keeper enjoyed a successful loan at Lincoln in the recent season and is heavily linked with a move to Portsmouth this summer.
The Albions recently confirmed the departure of Sam Johnstone, which means the top spot is up for grabs. However, the West Brom manager says he is happy with the options he has at his disposal.
“I am very happy with the situation. Button is in charge of it at the minute because he had such a good end to (last season),” Bruce was quoted in the report.
“And the young one (Griffiths) who has come back from a loan too so I’m very happy in that department. We’ve no problems there.
“With Josh it’s difficult. At this moment in time, do you let him push with the other two, or do you try and find a progression because he’s played over the last couple of years. We’ll see what develops because what’s best for him is crucial.”
Battle for No.1
In the recently concluded League One season with Lincoln, the 20-year-old played 33 games, conceded 46 goals and kept two clean sheets.
He played a total of 2970 minutes in League One and also made one appearance in the EFL trophy [Transfermarkt].
The goalkeeper averaged 0.8 clearances per game in the League One season. He completed 28 passes per match in the competition. However, he didn’t enjoy the sweeper role, completing only 69% of his overall passes [Whoscored].
Sam Johnstone has been a very good Championship keeper over the years and such keepers are very difficult to replace.
There have been reports that David Button is in the pole position to replace Johnstone in between the sticks but regardless of how he does, Bruce shouldn’t overlook the development of Griffiths.
The current West Brom keeper can be extremely influential in the domestic cups if he is not given a chance to represent the Albions in the Championship.
