Burnley set sight on West Brom defender Dara O’Shea

Championship rivals Burnley have set their sight on signing West Brom defender Dara O’Shea in the summer transfer window, as per Football League World.

The website reported on 13 July that Vincent Kompany has earmarked the Republic of Ireland international to replace Nathan Collins, who joined Wolverhampton Wanderers for £20.5 million this week.

FLW adds that O’Shea, who has been hailed by Steve Bruce as his “future captain” [The Mirror, 6 April, page 53], could be on the move this summer.

Big decision

The Baggies need to make a strong decision on him as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

The talented defender didn’t feature enough last season due to a serious ankle injury he suffered at the start of the campaign.

The central defender started the final five matches of the 2021-22 campaign under Steve Bruce, and the Baggies boss praised him heavily.

Kompany wants to add some international experience to the club’s back-line and he thinks O’Shea would be perfect for the Clarets. He wants Burnley to challenge for promotion next season, and it remains to be seen if the Baggies would be willing to do business with a direct promotion rival.

West Brom

O’Shea is a fantastic young talent who can be a long-term asset to the club. At the same time, he can fetch the club a decent transfer fee this summer, which Bruce can reinvest into the squad.

Surely, the club cannot drag it on and make it another situation like Sam Johnstone who left the club as a free agent.

Either the Baggies must offer him a new contract extension or let him go to Burnley if the offer is right. His contract cannot be allowed to run down.

In other West Brom news, Albion did make a huge offer for a Brazilian ace but they face a challenge from Norwich City.
