Steve Bruce confident West Brom can land striker before transfer window slams shut

Steve Bruce is confident that West Brom can land a new striker before the transfer window slams shut on 31 August.

The Baggies boss is looking to add to his forward ranks after losing American striker Daryl Dike to a thigh injury.

However, Bruce has offered a glimmer of hope for the Albion faithful when asked about the possibility of a new striker arriving before the window shuts.

Bruce delivered a one-word answer when asked if he was confident of a new striker arriving at the club.

“Yes,” said the West Brom boss (as quoted by The Express and Star, 19 August).

He added: “The easy thing is to bring in someone to just fill the numbers and that doesn’t improve us, and I won’t do that.

“We’ve got to be patient and not just bring one in for the sake of it.

“There are still two and a half weeks to go.

“We’ve been unfortunate with Dike – but even then we are a bit short.

“We will keep on bashing away and see what we can do.”

Glimmer of hope

Bruce has been anything but positive this summer since the arrivals of John Swift, Jed Wallace and Okay Yokuslu with his search for a striker proving to be a fruitless task.

The Baggies missed out on Manchester City youngster Liam Delap in what was another blow for Bruce after Dike’s injury.

If the American was fit, then West Brom could have enjoyed a far more profitable start to their Championship campaign.

The Baggies have shown they’re more than capable of creating good goalscoring chances, with Wallace proving to be a good attacking outlet at The Hawthorns.

In fact, Bruce’s side can count themselves as very unlucky not to have picked up two wins on their home patch, after strong performances against Watford and Cardiff.

Patience with Bruce will eventually wear thin, with the former Villa manager not the most popular manager to ever lead the Baggies.

However, he has been somewhat unfortunate in his hunt for a forward this summer.

Let’s hope his confidence is genuine and that a new frontman can come in to spark West Brom’s attacking play into life.
