Journalists claim Chris Wilder could be next in line for the West Brom job
Journalist Scott Wilson has made the bold claim that he “wouldn’t be shocked” if former Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder replaces Steve Bruce at West Brom.
Bruce was relieved of his duties as the Albion head coach on Monday morning after a torrid time in charge of the West Midlands outfit.
Wilson said it was “hardly a surprise” to see Bruce be sacked by West Brom and highlighted that he thinks Wilder is in with a shot of taking the job.
“Hardly a surprise to see former Newcastle and Sunderland boss Steve Bruce lose his job at West Brom,” said Wilson on his Twitter page.
“Wouldn’t be a shock to see ex-Boro manager Chris Wilder replace him at the Hawthorns either.”
TalkSport pundit Alex Crook also weighed in on the Bruce sacking, backing Wilson’s claims that Wilder could be the top option for the Albion.
“Chris Wilder would appear a decent option to replace him and was close to being appointed by West Brom before Ismael. Sure they have kept his CV,” said Crook.
No Lai.
Wilder certainly seems like a top option for the Baggies job but you have to remember it was only recently that club owner Lai Guochuan vetoed him getting the role when it was last available.
The unpopular chairman was reportedly on his own in this decision, no shock there.
This started what was a long and failed recruitment drive and has ultimately left Albion in the position they are in now, hopefully, the Chinese business has learned from his mistakes.
The decision was the final straw for sporting and technical director Luke Dowling, who left the club after his first choice of Wilder was thrown under the Baggies bus.
The culling from West Brom and Lai may even put off Wilder from wanting the West Brom job, who would want to be vetoed twice?
Nevertheless, the Albion board needs to get their act together and fast, time is ticking and the hectic Championship schedule is heating up.
