Sky Sports pundit: West Brom ‘anguish’ will be helped by return of Semi Ajayi

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom find themselves slumped in the Championship relegation zone, but the return of Semi Ajayi will be a huge boost.

Even after Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Blackpool, the Baggies find themselves 23rd in the Championship and still three points adrift from safety.

It emphasises the job at hand for Carlos Corberan, but the Spaniard was given an injury boost this week as he confirmed that Ajayi is in the “last step of their recoveries” [Birmingham Mail].

Ajayi hasn’t featured for West Brom since suffering a number of setbacks since August, and Kevin Campbell believes his return to the side will be a huge boost.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Campbell said: “He’s a big player.

“West Bromwich Albion need their big players back.

“They need all their players back fit, healthy and playing well because the football club is in anguish – its not good for anybody.

“So getting one of the best players back is important.”

The win against Blackpool has to act as a turning point for West Brom. The side put on a spirited display and looked as though they were buying into Corberan’s methods.

The Spaniard still has a lot of work to do and will require every minute of the World Cup break to truly drill his players. But it was a much-needed win and a much-needed clean sheet.

The Baggies have been so poor defensively this season, so Ajayi’s return will be great news for Corberan. The 28-year-old will likely slot immediately into the back line upon his return.

That could well come before the World Cup break, although Corberan may want to avoid any risks of worsening his injury and just wait until after the Championship returns to hand him his spot in the lineup back.
