West Brom boost as three players could return for Championship clash v Sunderland

West Brom could be handed a major injury boost with three players potentially returning for their Championship clash against Sunderland, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Semi Ajayi has recently featured in a midseason friendly against Elche, as the central defender closes in on a Championship comeback (Birmingham Mail, 6 December).

Karlan Grant missed the last couple of games before the World break, but he had been making “positive” steps on a small injury before the Championship season ground to a halt.

It’s also thought Grady Diangana will be fit for the clash against the Mackems after missing the friendly against the La Liga side with a minor issue.

Positive

The World Cup break came at a really bad time for the Baggies, after they recorded three wins on the spin. Carlos Corberan would’ve been desperate to keep his side’s momentum going to pull them further away from the relegation zone.

Sunderland will be a tough test, and they have adapted well to life in the Championship after their promotion from League One in the 2021/22 season. It can sometimes be a leap too far, but they have shown they’re more than a match for most sides in the second tier.

Furthermore, Tony Mowbray’s men are coming off an impressive 3-0 win over Millwall, and they will be looking to close the gap on the playoffs when the Baggies travel to the Stadium of Light on Monday (12 December).

For Corberan, it’s a stern test to restart the season, but if Albion can be defensively resolute, and show the attacking quality they displayed against QPR and Stoke, then they have an excellent chance of getting a result.
