Kevin Campbell backs West Brom to have active January window after ‘positive’ loan news

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Campbell believes West Brom taking out a £20million loan is a “positive” with the January transfer window now open.

The club announced (28 December) that they had taken a loan from MSD UK Holdings in order to support the general business operations at The Hawthorns.

There has been some concern over the loan being taken out with the Express and Star’s Jonny Drury calling for the club to “explain exactly why” it was taken (personal Twitter account, 28 December).

However, Campbell believes the loan could well be the Baggies gearing up to invest in the January window, with Carlos Corberan’s side currently just outside the playoff places.

“If you have just taken a £20million loan out and you’ve got January coming up, to me that sounds like they’re definitely trying to acquire a few players. That’s what that sounds like to me,” Campbell exclusively told West Brom News.

“Carlos Corberan gets his window now and there have been some signs of life, they’ve won a few games so I can only see that [the loan] as a positive for the club.”

The Baggies could find themselves inside the playoff places after their next Championship against Reading at The Hawthorns. The positive form on the pitch has certainly detracted from the chaos which seems to be ensuing off of it at the moment.

It will be interesting to see if Albion do use the loan to invest further in Corberan’s squad to mount an unlikely promotion challenge.
