West Brom fail to strike deal for Nathaniel Chalobah transfer in January

West Brom have failed to strike a deal for Fulham midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, according to a report from The Express and Star.

Evening Standard journalist Nizaar Kinsella reported on 27 January that the Baggies were aiming to acquire the service of the 28-year-old midfielder on an 18-month deal.

Carlos Corberan, however, could be forced to bring in new faces following the injury to Matt Phillips before Tuesday’s (31 January) 11 pm deadline.

The Daily Mail (28 January, page 113), however, reported that West Brom are still in talks to sign the former Chelsea midfielder this month.

West Brom do have Grady Diangana, Karlan Grant and Jed Wallace in Phillips’ position, but his loss is a big blow to the club.

Corberan took charge of the club when the Baggies are deep down in the relegation zone. He instilled confidence in the players, and now they are fighting for promotion.

The manager needs support in the transfer market. West Brom don’t need massive changes to their squad, but a little injection of quality can make a big difference.

The problem is Corberan probably won’t get any single penny to spend in the market.

The club owner keeps on failing deadlines for repayment. Had the Baggies received the sum of £4.95m in January, they could have given Corberan some chunk of it to sign one or two players.

However, no one knows when Guochuan Lai will repay the money. On top of this, the Baggies have borrowed a sum of £20m to manage the cost of running the club on a daily basis.

The Baggies probably will miss out on signing Chalobah, but let’s hope they can land one or two players before the transfer deadline.

In other West Brom news, this striker has been spotted at Birmingham New Street ahead of joining the Baggies.
