Sheffield United need to clear EFL debt to beat West Brom in transfer race for Lewis O’Brien amid £10m update

Sheffield United need clear their debt before they can consider making a move for West Brom transfer target Lewis O’Brien, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

It’s understood Albion and the Blades are both looking into a loan deal for the 24-year-old, with Nottingham Forest hoping to move the midfielder out of the City Ground.

Nixon has also suggested (personal Patreon, 30 January) the Baggies will have to pledge to pay £10million to make O’Brien’s loan move permanent if they are promoted to the Premier League.

West Brom

Sheffield United are currently under an EFL embargo and need to sell players to clear debt if they wish to make a move for the former Huddersfield man.

Tricky one

This is a really tricky move for the Baggies to weigh up. O’Brien has previously worked with Carlos Corberan and was one of the Championship’s standout performers in the 2021/22 campaign. He would add quality to West Brom’s current midfield and could well be the difference in them mounting a credible promotion push.

However, we are all completely aware of the financial issues which currently cloud The Hawthorns. Even if the Baggies do get promoted, £10million is a significant sum of money and it would he understandable if the board backed down from this deal.

West Brom

West Brom are in a good position If they do want to push on and get a move over the line from the player’s perspective. He’s previously worked with Corberan and O’Brien could be keen to get his career back on track under the stewardship of the Spaniard. This is one to definitely keep an eye on over the course of the next 48 hours.

In other West Brom news, this striker has been spotted at Birmingham New Street ahead of joining the Baggies.
