West Brom can’t afford to lose too many stars, as more players near an exit

With Dara O’Shea gone, and Jayson Molumby, Karlan Grant and Grady Diangana possibly following him, West Brom need to be careful they don’t let too many stars leave if they can’t be sure of replacing them.

West Brom are under pressure to balance the books, as their parachute payments upon relegation from the Premier League have run out, and are therefore listening to offers for a number of players.

While it has been reported that the Baggies won’t allow their players to leave cheaply, they need to ensure those who do leave are adequately replaced, or risk tumbling down the table.

With key players such as Molumby, Grant and Diangana, who made 105 league appearances combined last season, all linked to moves away, West Brom are in danger of letting too many key players leave, with no guarantee they will be able to replace them.

Finding a balance between gaining enough income to avoid financial ramifications, and keeping hold of the key players to remain competitive will be difficult, but it is key if they want to continue the progression they have made since the arrival of Carlos Corberan, with their ambition to get back into the Premier League.

In terms of incomings, the Baggies have been linked to Exeter City’s Josh Key (Football Insider), who could replace Diangana, and Marvelous Nakamba (Darren Witcoop) who would fill the gap left by Molumby’s departure, but it is not always as simple as like-for-like replacements filling gaps.

Any team who lets their star players leave are likely to suffer, even with replacements coming in, and West Brom will be no different. They will hope Corberan can continue to keep up the impressive impact he’s had since his arrival.

West Brom will need to be careful with selling their stars, and clever in who they bring in, if they want to mount a promotion push next season.

In other West Brom news, finance guru Dan Plumley has insisted that the club could be worth as little as £50million as takeover rumours swirl.
