West Brom news as ‘Farcical’ Carlos Corberan rule block emerges

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan did not take part in post-match media duties following his sending off, after FA disciplinary rules were changed, according to journalist Joe Chapman.

The Birmingham Live journalist shared the news of the FA rule change via his personal Twitter account on 5 August, calling it “farcical” as new Baggies captain Jed Wallace took the manager’s place in front of the media.

The rule states that any non-playing participant is removed from the technical area, as Corberan was, they are not permitted to take part in post-match media commitments, including both external and internal media on the day of the fixture.

A strange turn of events

Having been sent off by the referee during the game, one would expect Corberan to be able to explain the decision, or his own actions, by speaking to the media as he always would post-match. A change to the disciplinary rules seems out of place and only impacts waiting media and fans.

While the reason may be to protect referees from abuse, it is unlikely Corberan would speak to the media with any malice or risk being punished himself. As it stands though, his dismissal goes unexplained and without comment.

Not only does the rule restrict the manager from explaining his dismissal, but also from explaining in-game decisions, selections, style of play and other potentially useful and intriguing information which media and fans often look forward to post-game.

West Brom

Corberan will now have to face his squad and prepare for their next fixture, having suffered a disappointing defeat at Ewood Park on the season’s opening day, in what was an ultimately unlucky loss having conceded two early goals.

In other West Brom news, one player suffered a ‘nasty’ challenge which has set the tone for the season.
