Matt Phillips delivers verdict on Carlos Corberan amid ‘improve’ promise at West Brom

Matt Phillips labelled West Brom boss Carlos Corberan as a “great coach” and is confident his training methods will help the team to improve on an individual and team level.

The wing-back stated that the squad learn something new every time they have a meeting with the Spaniard, and hailed the drive he brings to the squad.

Phillips added that since the boss’ arrival in October 2022, he has helped him to constantly grow and improve, thus taking his game to new levels.

In quotes reported by the Express and Star (9 September), Phillips stated: “[His influence has been] brilliant, his drive and determination every day is something to be really admired.

“Not only is he a great coach, a top coach, every day he is teaching us his way and beliefs of football. Boys can come into a meeting room and you leave having learned something, that’s one of the biggest things.

“We are going to improve as a team but a large part of training is improving individually, drills that he’s come up with that help you improve as individuals and a team.”

The 32-year-old has also shared you never stop learning in football, saying: “In the game-understanding, I’ve never really looked at football in the way that he’s made me look at football in the last eight or nine months.

“It’s interesting, with the way the game’s going you’ve got to constantly evolve and continue to learn the game.”

The players believe in the project

It has been a tricky start to the season for the Baggies. Two wins, two defeats and a draw from five games, as well as a Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City, has not necessarily been much to sing about, but the squad all appear to believe in the manager and the direction they are heading.

A defeat to Huddersfield saw the Baggies fall in the 96th minute – a sour note to lead into the international break, but it has given the boss plenty of food for thought and scope for improvement over the short break.

Phillips’ comments highlight that you can never stop improving different parts of your game and this has been displayed on the pitch, where he has filled in as a left-wing back, right-winger and left-winger so far this season, always prepared to do a job wherever he is called upon.

Corberan’s drive, ambition, and understanding of the players will only lead to positives, and if each player keeps improving as Phillips has stated, they should go from strength to strength when Championship football returns.
