Jed Wallace in danger of brutal Carlos Corberan axe at West Brom after dreadful display v QPR

West Brom climbed back into the Championship top six with a comfortable 2-0 win against 10-man QPR but Carlos Corberan will have grave concerns over the performance of key star Jed Wallace.

Baggies striker Brandon Thomas-Asante netted a 59th-minute penalty before man-of-the-match Grady Diangana scored the second nine minutes later, after he had been tripped by Kenneth Paal for the spot-kick.

The result meant West Brom head coach Carlos Corberan celebrated his one-year anniversary as West Brom manager in style with the club now up to fifth in the table with 20 points from their 13 games so far.

The table certainly makes for encouraging reading for Corberan and his men given the mounting injury problems they’re enduring right now after it was confirmed defender Cedric Kipre could now be facing months out with a knee injury.

John Swift, Daryl Dike, Jeremy Sarmiento, Josh Maja, and Semi Ajayi have all faced injury setbacks in recent weeks and months at West Brom which means Corberan has had to rely on a few old heads to bail them out of trouble.

Senior Baggies man Wallace has certainly emerged as one of the Spaniard’s most trusted lieutenants in recent weeks, being forced to play up-front on occasions to compensate for the loss of Maja up front.

However, the 29-year-old returned to his familiar wide role on Tuesday expected to take on some of the creative void left by Swift’s recent injury but showcased a performance that will have Corberan majorly concerned right now.

This is a pivotal campaign for the Spaniard and his team, with a play-off place the minimal expectation from those above him and for that to be fulfilled Corberan will need maximum quality, output and fitness from every player at his disposal.

So far this season, Wallace has failed to provide that with just one goal and three assists to his name all season and looked nowhere near adding to that tally against a hapless QPR at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

As per SofaScore, the Baggies forward who was the subject of a multi-million-pound bid from Middlesbrough in the summer (The Telegraph, 19 September), picked up the worst averaging score of any West Brom player at 6.1/10.

He failed to register a single key pass, lost possession of the ball a whopping 17 times, barely touched the ball with just 39 touches in 90 minutes, missed a big chance, lost 100% of his aerial duels and won just one ground duel all game.

It would have been greeted with great disappointment if Wallace had left West Brom over the summer following his excellent first season at the club.

The midfielder scored six goals and laid on eight assists as he appeared in every single game for Albion over the course of the campaign. However, recent performances have suggested he may not even hit those heights again and should it continue on, Corberan may be left with no choice but to brutally axe him.
