BBC Sport journalist blown away by ‘stunning’ Matt Phillips moment in West Brom v Coventry City

Matt Phillips delivered a “stunning” pass to set up Brandon Thomas-Asante’s goal for West Brom against Coventry City, according to BBC Sport journalist Ged Scott.

The Baggies defeated the Sky Blues 2-0 in their Championship encounter at the CBS Arena on Monday (30 October).

Grady Diangana scored the other goal of the match as West Brom climbed up to fifth place in the table, with Coventry sitting 20th.

“Despite a lot of possession in and around the Baggies box, City had nothing to show for it,” Scott wrote for BBC Sport. “They did have one glorious chance on 51 minutes when USA striker Wright went clear, only to fire the wrong side of the post.

“But the three points were sealed on 69 minutes when Phillips delivered a stunning ball down the left flank with the outside of his right foot to send Thomas-Asante clear, down the inside-left channel and Ben Wilson was left rooted to the spot as he delivered a superb finish with his right instep.

“Despite concerns among home fans that he might have been offside, Thomas-Asante appeared to time his run to perfection, the flag stayed down – and he ruthlessly buried his fifth goal of the season and, like Diangana, his second in successive games.”

Huge win

Remarkably the Baggies made it two successive 2-0 league victories with the same scorers, with the only difference being that Thomas-Asante netted first in the recent win against QPR, with Diangana scoring the second.

Carlos Corberan’s men produced a very professional display at both ends of the pitch against Coventry, with the defence picking up another impressive clean sheet.

That is a third successive shutout for the Baggies after they drew 0-0 against Plymouth Argyle, with Corberan set to be delighted at how difficult his team have been to break down lately.

The three points leave the Albion just one point behind Southampton in fourth and two points  behind Leeds United in third.

Corberan will undoubtedly be eyeing a leapfrogging of those two newly-relegated clubs when his side host Hull City on Saturday (4 November), with the Saints travelling to Millwall and the Whites visiting league leaders Leicester City next up.

In other West Brom news, an 88% Baggies star has deservedly been handed recognition from Sky Sports after his blistering start to the season.
