Sky Sports pundit dumbfounded by ‘incredible’ Matt Phillips incident in West Brom win v Ipswich

Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe was in disbelief at Matt Phillips’ miss from five yards as West Brom played out a 2-0 victory against Ipswich Town.

Carlos Corberan’s West Brom side were cruising at 2-0, with the visitors struggling to make an impact on the game, and Phillips should have put the icing on the cake with a third.

Jed Wallace had his fourth assist of the season taken from him as Phillips failed to convert from inside the six-yard area, which would have put the game out of sight for Ipswich.

Speaking live on Sky Sports on Saturday (25 November, 6:44pm), Hinchcliffe said, “That hasn’t gone in because he’s gone with the outside of his right boot; let it come across your body.

“Any connection and that’s 3-0, game over. It’s an incredible miss. It’s an intelligent run from Wallace, the choice of cross is absolutely perfect, and Phillips goes with his right foot but he doesn’t need to do that.

“West Brom should be out of sight.”

No rueing missed chance for the Baggies

Luckily for Phillips, a lack of fightback from the Tractor Boys meant that his missed chance was a funny moment to look back on, rather than one of huge regret.

It happens. Footballers are human, but if Ipswich were to have made a comeback, the miss would have been inexcusable. Any closer and he would have been in the goal.

West Brom

Goals from Darnell Furlong and Grady Diangana helped West Brom to a 2-0 win over the team in second place, pushing the club into the illusive play-off spots.

It is one of West Brom’s most important three points of the season so far, showing their most pronounced intention for this season – promotion.

Even despite the number of heavyweight clubs now in the division, such as Leicester City, Ipswich, Leeds United and Southampton, West Brom are looking like a very confident side and will be looking to take every chance to keep up the pressure on the rest of the promotion-hopefuls.
