West Brom: Carlos Corberan shares Brandon Thomas-Asante injury update after Sunderland defeat
Carlos Corberan has revealed that West Brom star Brandon Thomas-Asante was unable to start the Baggies’ defeat to Sunderland because of a muscle injury.
The Baggies made it back-to-back defeats with a 2-1 loss at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 9 December, with Thomas-Asante scoring Albion’s only goal in the closing minutes of the clash with a header from close range.
Despite starting West Brom’s last five Championship matches, the 24-year-old was surprisingly absent from Corberan’s starting XI, with the Spaniard confirming he wasn’t fit enough to feature from the start on Saturday.
As quoted by BBC Radio West Midland (9 December) he said: “When you have only the option to play Asante for around 30 minutes and after your first eleven striker gets an injury, you need to find solutions with the other players.”
Corberan also confirmed that the extent of Josh Maja’s latest injury is currently unknown.
Worrying record
West Brom fans must be wondering what they have done to deserve this recent torrid run of fitness, with the likes of Jed Wallace, Kyle Bartley, Maja, Matt Phillips and now Thomas-Asante all suffering with some sort of injury that has limited their involvement.
The next few weeks of the season have the potential to be defining for the Baggies in their hunt for a playoff place with the games coming thick and fast over the festive period and in an ideal period, Corberan would have a fully fit squad at his disposal.

But the Baggies are looking incredibly short of options, especially in attack and it will be interesting to see who leads the line against Rotherham at the New York Stadium next time out if Thomas-Asante is still unable to feature from the start.
West Brom need to get back to winning ways after suffering back-to-back defeats and on paper a trip to Rotherham should see them return to The Hawthorns with three points. However, the current injury crisis could have a big say in how that clash pans out.
