Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood baffled by what he saw in West Brom v Norwich City, ‘why would you do that?’

Tim Sherwood accused Borja Sainz of letting his Norwich City teammates down for his red card in the first half against West Brom on Boxing Day (26 December).

Already on a yellow card, Sainz saw red after 33 minutes at The Hawthorns for waving an imaginary yellow card at the referee.

Former Tottenham manager Sherwood, covering the game for Sky Sports News, was left flabbergasted by the forward’s silly moment.

West Brom

He said: “He’s going to the referee you should book him (John Swift) for a tackle, it’s his second bookable offence and he’s sent him off, why would you do that?

“You know the referee’s going to give you the card and he gives him a second booking and he’s sent him off, 10 men Norwich.

“He should have scored about a minute earlier as well he had a fantastic opportunity to do so but he’s lifting his hand up telling the referee what he should do, just leave it mate. You’ve let your side down, now you’re down to 10 men it’s uphill struggle, it was anyway. Wagner can’t be happy with him.”

Sherwood is absolutely spot that visiting manager David Wagner will not have been impressed by what he saw from Sainz, who was already on a yellow card and gave the referee a seriously easy decision to make to send him off.

But it is not just Wagner who will not be impressed. The home supporters will not be impressed, the away supporters definitely will not be impressed, anyone watching the highlights will not be impressed, hell I’m not impressed.

Okay, admittedly it is not football’s biggest offence, we all accept that. But it is the sort of petulance that we absolutely want to see stamped out of the game and good on the referee for doing just that.

Sainz will now have plenty of time to think his moment of stupidity given he will miss Norwich’s next game through suspension, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sat out for longer given Wagner will have to decide if he can trust him moving forward.
