Paul Merson blown away live on Sky Sports by what West Brom star Jed Wallace did in 2-0 loss v Norwich City

Paul Merson was blown away after Jed Wallace’s “brilliant” play and cross to Brandon Thomas-Asante which led to a chance against Norwich City on Saturday (20 January).

The Albion were looking to build on from their impressive 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at The Hawthorns (13 January) and strengthen their position in the playoff places when they travelled to Carrow Road.

West Brom made hard work of their efforts when Josh Sargeant put the home side ahead after a tremendous counter-attack which caught the Baggies defence out.

The Baggies pushed for an equaliser before half-time and could have levelled when Thomas-Asante struck a couple minutes before the break but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

And the Albion striker could have had another chance after some excellent work by Wallace which blew Merson away live on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday (20 January, 3:50 pm).

He said: “It’s 1-0 to Norwich at half-time but Wallace did brilliant on the right-hand side, he nicks the ball, plays it straight into the box for Thomas-Asante who’s got to have a better touch it bounces off him and Norwich get it away.”

Inspiration

The Baggies will be mightily disappointed at how they conceded Norwich City’s opener, desperately caught on the counter-attack, something that has been a rarity for the club so far this season.

It was poor play from the likes of Conor Towsend and Cedric Kipre who were caught out after poor positioning and it was left to the West Brom attack to bail the away side out of trouble.

With Corberan still in the midst of an injury crisis right now, he will have been delighted to be able to select the likes of Wallace and John Swift who have suffered with differing niggles of late, a crucial boost to have them back.

West Brom

It was a fairly abject display from the senior West Brom attacker but one moment of magic is enough for Wallace to become the inspiration they need and he nearly pulled it off before half-time only for Thomas-Asante to disappoint with a poor touch.

West Brom

Any hopes the Albion have of promotion this season, Wallace will be absolutely pivotal and it is important they keep him fit in the gruelling run-in that is ahead in the Championship.

He will be demanding personal improvement in their next game after a disappointing result and performance.
