Lee Dixon reacts to Brandon Thomas-Asante penalty controversy in West Brom v Wolves

Lee Dixon has reacted to the Brandom Thomas-Asante penalty claim which wasn’t given as West Brom lost to Wolves, claiming it the Albion striker kicked the Wolves man.

The incident saw a ball squared across the box by Jed Wallace in what looked almost a certain goal for Albion before a coming-together between Thomas-Asante and saw the ball cleared.

Albion’s striker was left in a heap, screaming to the referee for a penalty, but the decision never came in what turned out to be a game-defining moment as another chance never fell to West Brom.

Speaking live on ITV 1 [12:57], Dixon shared: “As he comes across, I think it’s just brilliant defending. Just get in the way, he’s not put his foot in to make the challenge, he’s just got in the way. It’s the back of the legs that Thomas-Asante kicks, it’s not a penalty for me.”

Six of one, half a dozen of another

It was one of those where whichever way the decision went, neither set of fans really would have been able to argue, but the ultimate decision of no penalty was probably the right one in the circumstances.

As Thomas-Asante looked to put the ball in, he found the defender in his way simply looking to prevent the ball from going in, throwing his body in the way and doing his job perfectly. It may have been frustrating for the striker, but it wasn’t enough to warrant a penalty.’

If Albion had taken their chances in the game, they would not have to rely on dubious penalty shouts to find the back of the net. Several key chances missed, particularly from BTA and Wallace with headed chances in the first half, were the story of the game in the end.

West Brom

It was a frustrating game for Albion, with some impressive individual performances despite the lack of cutting-edge, but at the end of the day, it was the Premier League quality that made the difference in the derby.
