Chris Lepkowski ‘shocked’ by West Brom fans’ reactions to alleged racist abuse

Chris Lepkowski has been left “shocked” by the reactions of some of the West Brom fans to the alleged racist abuse in the game against Birmingham City on Saturday (3 February).

The former Birmingham Mail journalist tweeted on Saturday that it’s “uncomfortable” that the Baggies employing three black footballers 45 years ago – Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson – is a “free pass to excuse abuse” after Blues midfielder Juninho Bacuna reported racist abuse during the game at The Hawthorns.

After a fellow Twitter user said they hadn’t seen anyone excusing the individual’s behaviour, Lepkowski responded in another tweet by saying “Are you being serious?”, adding that it’s “horrendous” to see the number of people that have done.

Another day of disappointing scenes for West Brom at The Hawthorns

After what happened with the crowd trouble against Wolves on 28 January, West Brom would have been hoping the game against Birmingham would have gone ahead without any issues.

But that wasn’t to be the case as Bacuna was allegedly subjected to racist abuse, something that is completely and utterly unacceptable in any walk of life.

If people are defending those actions, then that is quite shocking because the Baggies are a far better – and much prouder – club than that.

It’s another week where what’s happened in the stands has taken over what it should be about – and that’s two rival clubs going head to head to try and send their fans home happy.

In this instance, it is just one person causing the issue, but that’s still one too many and this theme of the past couple of weekends needs to stop.
