100% West Brom star Andreas Weimann shines in ‘perfect’ moment v Birmingham City

Andi Weimann scored his first West Brom goal in the 1-0 win against Birmingham City on Saturday 3 February, in what proved to be a perfect moment for the former Aston Villa striker.

Not only scoring his first goal for his new club, but the timing of it as he took all three points with the late goal, showed something that has often been missing for Albion this season.

The forward took some stick following the game for his celebrations where he taunted the travelling support, but he has clarified his actions, claiming if they can give it they should be able to take it.

Speaking to the Express & Star [5 February], Weimann shared: “When I came on, I heard the away end singing a few songs about me. I was praying I’d have a chance and score and I had that last laugh.

“When I came on I heard the away end shout a few – I won’t say the words – but something to do with being at Villa before. I thought ‘If they give it they have to take it’. I just clapped them off.

“It was the perfect goal. It is the striker’s job to get in front of the front post and those types of finishes I like. That’s my strength.”

A perfect start at The Hawthorns

It was a perfect start for Weimann on his home debut. He had appeared off the bench against Norwich at Carrow Road but finally got his chance to perform at home and took his chance perfectly.

Having entered the field off the bench with 21 minutes to play, Weimann was on the outskirts of the game for the most part, touching the ball just ten times and only completing two passes from three attempted [Sofascore] but he was in the right place at the right time.

That’s what Albion have been missing this season. A poacher who, even if he isn’t involved too much in the game, will find the back of the net. Brandon Thomas-Asante has been the main number nine this season but has just nine goals in 27 appearances.

Despite completing just two passes, he recorded a 100 per cent long-pass accuracy but did lose the ball on four occasions as he failed to complete any of his attempted dribbles and won just 33 per cent of his ground duels.

Those stats, though, are irrelevant. He scored what proved to be the winning goal to take all three points for Carlos Corberan’s side, and helped them in their continued march towards a playoff place at the end of the season.
