West Brom: Gabby Agbonlahor cannot believe what’s happened at The Hawthorns

Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted it’s been “too long” since West Brom were last in the Premier League as they look to gain promotion this season.

Speaking to new Baggies signing Andreas Weimann on talkSPORT on Tuesday (6 February, 06:24pm), the pundit said he was “happy” to see the Austrian international score his first goal for the club in the 1-0 victory over Birmingham City on Saturday (3 February).

He added that Albion should be back in the top flight, with the 32-year-old Weimann, who joined on loan from Bristol City in the January transfer window, claiming that the Championship is a “crazy” division, but he believes the club are in a “good position” in the playoffs.

“We don’t mind West Brom, Andi,” added Agbonlahor. “It’s Birmingham City that you couldn’t go to, that’s the one team, but West Brom and Wolves are fine. I was happy to see you score, not just because it was Birmingham City. It’s always good scoring goals, isn’t it?

“You left Bristol City, you’ve gone to West Brom. It’s been too long for West Brom to not be in the Premier League. If I watch the Championship, season after season I look at West Brom and think they should be back in the Premier League. Do you think this is your best chance?”

“I hope so,” replied Weimann. “I only joined three weeks ago, but it seems a good squad and everyone’s buzzing around the training ground. We’re in fifth place at the minute, so we’re in a good position to get into those playoffs.

“Obviously, the Championship is crazy with how many games there are still to play. But I think we’ll give it a right good go. Obviously, that’s my aim, getting promoted.”

West Brom are well-placed to challenge for promotion

There is no doubt that West Brom fans would have snapped your hand off to be battling it out for a playoff place this season after several players left the club last summer.

Carlos Corberan has got his side extremely well organised and picked up some massive results as he looks to ensure the Baggies are still in the mix come the end of the season.

This is their third campaign back in the Championship and the supporters will be hoping they don’t have to wait too much longer before they are back in the Premier League.

Weimann will be hoping his experience can play a key role in Albion’s bid for promotion after registering his first goal for the club against Birmingham.

The winger will be looking to do enough to earn a permanent contract at The Hawthorns before he’s due to return to Bristol City at the end of the campaign.
