West Brom: Alex Palmer ‘disappointed’ with Carlos Corberan decision at The Hawthorns
West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer admits he was “disappointed” not to start the recent FA Cup clash with Wolves, but understands the decision.
Carlos Corberan opted to start Josh Griffiths between the sticks for what proved to be a disappointing 2-0 fourth-round loss on 28 January.
That was a rare opportunity for Griffiths to shine, as Palmer has started all 29 of Albion’s matches in the Championship this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports News [7 February, 13:27pm], Palmer said: “I was disappointed because everyone wants to play in the big games.
“But Josh is a great guy and a great goalkeeper who deserved the chance to start the game, so I understood the decision and fully supported him.”
Most Championship clean sheets
Palmer has been superb for West Brom between the sticks this season, boasting the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the league.
While that is down to a team effort – and full credit to Corberan for that – Palmer is the last line of defence and has made some huge saves.
The recent Wolves clash was huge for obvious reasons and many were disappointed that Corberan did not stick with his first-choice goalkeeper.
However, it is important that fringe players are given an opportunity, and cup competitions are realistically the only chance Griffiths will get.

Should Palmer be injured or suspended between now and the end of the season, at least Griffiths has some recent minutes under his belt.
As Palmer himself says, Griffiths is himself a good goalkeeper and it may well be that Corberan needs to call upon him again at some point.
For now, let’s just hope the undisputed number one remains fit and adds more clean sheets to his tally to help West Brom to promotion.
