Cedric Kipre shines as MOTM with 8/10, John Swift poor with 4/10 – West Brom player ratings v Cardiff City
West Brom bounced back with a dominant 2-0 win over Cardiff City at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night, with Cedric Kipre the standout performer.
The Baggies couldn’t have asked for a better start when Tom Fellows found Mikey Johnston after just 28 seconds to tuck home a strike to give the side the lead.
The rest of the first-half was a relatively quiet affair with Albion controlling possession but not creating many clear chances, while Cardiff looked threatening more from set-pieces than anything else.
The second half was quiet for the most part with Aaron Ramsey missing the biggest opportunity for either side, before substitutes Jed Wallace and Andreas Weimann linked up for the January signing to tap in and seal all three points at The Hawthorns.
Here is how West Brom News rated the performance of each player from the game..
Alex Palmer – 6/10
The goalkeeper oozed calmness on the ball and presence at set-pieces, while his distribution was first class too. A Premier League goalkeeper in a Championship shirt if we’ve ever seen one.
Darnell Furlong – 6/10
A steady Eddie as they’re known, Furlong turned in a solid performance at right-back with very little to do. He ensured that Cardiff got no joy from his side, while he linked well with Fellows in attack too.
Erik Pieters – 7/10
Stepping into the side after a fairly long absence to replace Kyle Bartley was never going to be an easy job, but he made it look simple. Had little to do in fairness, but got nothing wrong and proved why he was first in line to step in.
West Brom saved millions with Kipre decision
Cedric Kipre – 8/10
West Brom didn’t have much to do defensively throughout the game, but anything that looked like it could be dangerous was snuffed out by Kipre who looked dominant. A top performance, and a full circle moment against the team he spent last season on loan at when it looked like he had no future at the club.
Connor Townsend – 6/10
Much like Furlong, Townsend had a pretty comfortable game. One moment that saw him lapse in concentration almost led to a Ramsey headed goal but thankfully it didn’t.
Okay Yokuslu – 7/10
Another masterclass from the Turkey midfielder, who ran the show with his passing and defensive discipline. Collecting the ball from the centre-backs to ease the pressure on them and helping to build attacks, he’s by far the best midfielder at the club. No wonder clubs were trying to sign him in January.
Alex Mowatt – 6/10
Mowatt, like Kipre, looked to have no future at West Brom last season but he has pushed his way back into the plans and team of Corberan. A solid showing next to Yokuslu again, where he just did everything that was asked of him with minimal fuss or stress.

Mikey Johnston – 6/10
A perfect start to his career at The Hawthorns with a well taken goal just 28 seconds into the game. But he fizzled out of the game as it went on and it was no surprise to see him substituted after around 65 minutes.
John Swift was a shadow of his former self vs Cardiff
John Swift – 4/10
The midfielder got his goal at the weekend and looked set to push on with a start, but Swift was largely anonymous throughout. Didn’t get on the ball enough to create for the team and did nothing to prove he deserves a start in the next game. A poor showing overall.
Tom Fellows – 7/10
An electric start to the game and a brilliant assist for the goal, and was largely the most constant threat for the team out wide in a pretty uneventful game of football. Another solid showing for the future superstar.
Brandon Thomas-Asante – 5/10
It wasn’t the prettiest showing from the ex-Salford man as most of his best work was done defensively with his pressing rather than his finishing in the final third. Needs to start becoming more prolific with Daryl Dike out for a long time.
SUBSTITUTES
Jed Wallace – 7/10
Adam Reach – 5/10
Andreas Weimann – 7/10
Nathaniel Chalobah – N/A
Callum Marshall – N/A
