West Brom: Carlos Corberan makes new playoff admission after Championship announcement

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has admitted he has no interest in individual awards after he missed out on the shortlist for Championship Manager of the Year.

The Baggies currently sit fifth in the Championship but despite having one foot already in the playoffs, Corberan has been overlooked in favour of Leeds boss Daniel Farke, Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna and Hull manager Liam Rosenior.

While a number of supporters and pundits have been left baffled by the Albion boss’ omission, Corberan himself has brushed off any unhappiness suggesting his only focus is on the battle for the top six.

As quoted by the Express & Star (6 April) he said: “Football is a collective sport, I don’t believe or don’t have interest in individual awards for players or coaches. My only focus is on helping this club in the best way I can to put it in the best position.

“Thanks to the work of my players we arrive in the last moment of the season with a possibility to fight for a play-off position. We have many games to play and this possibility is the only thing that is important to me.”

Will West Brom and Carlos Corberan win promotion to the Premier League?

Corberan’s admission that he isn’t at all bothered by individual awards speaks volumes about the sort of environment the Spaniard has created at The Hawthorns. What was a team of individuals is now united in its mission.

While supporters and pundits will always continue to argue that the Baggies’ boss’ work this season more than warrants a place on the EFL shortlist, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Albion have an excellent chance of doing something genuinely special this season and while it will be tough for them to come out on top should they qualify for the playoffs, they have shown they can beat any side in the Championship this term.

Whichever side out of Leeds, Ipswich and Leicester misses out on automatic promotion will almost certainly be favourites, but there won’t be many teams hoping they face the Baggies in such a high-pressure game.

Hopefully, Corberan and his side can get over the finish line and make some history this season.
