Andy Johnson rages over ‘cheating’ after West Brom v Preston incident – ‘It’s a red card’
Andy Johnson has slammed Preston North End defender Liam Lindsay for “blatantly cheating” against West Brom, suggesting he should have been sent off for his cynical foul on Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Baggies striker Thomas-Asante had turned past his opponent and was set to lead a fast break before being hauled back by Lindsay, who grabbed him from behind.
Johnson felt that cynical fouls such as these should be worthy of a red card, rather than just a yellow.
Speaking live on WBA TV (4 May), he said: “For me, that is a red card.
“If they use the cards correctly, it’s a red card for me. That’s blatantly, blatantly cheating.”
West Brom cruised to victory against the 11 men of Preston North End
While Johnson may have wanted Preston reduced to 10 men for Lindsay’s challenge on Thomas-Asante, West Brom proved more than capable of beating their opponents with a full complement.
Lindsay was the culprit once again as he scythed Darnell Furlong down in the box towards the end of the first half, giving Alex Mowatt the opportunity to open the scoring from the spot – and the midfielder did so with aplomb, sending goalkeeper Freddie Woodman the wrong way.
Furlong then found Kyle Bartley with a long throw and the central defender’s header fortuitously dropped over the line after Woodman had come out and failed to meet the ball.
And the right-back rounded off the scoring as the Baggies won 3-0, steering home from Conor Townsend’s cut-back.

It was a dominant display from West Brom, who racked up an xG of 2.81 to Preston’s 0.14, taking 16 shots to the visitors’ five [FotMob].
Even with 11 against 11, Carlos Corberan’s men managed just fine.
