Championship clubs agree on PSR change, can help West Brom if they don’t win promotion

West Brom could have a small silver lining should they fail to achieve promotion from the Championship play-offs in the coming weeks.

As reported by Mail Online [8 May], Championship clubs can now report losses of up to £41.5m throughout the reporting period as opposed to the current £39m – the latest in a series of moves attracting ire from Premier League clubs over the suitability of Profit & Sustainability Rules.

It is understood that the changes are to reflect rising operational costs and staff salaries in the wake of inflation during the cost of living crisis.

Should West Brom remain in the Championship next season, they will be one of the clubs this change will benefit, giving second-tier sides more room for manoeuvre.

Carlos Corberan will be keen to improve the squad significantly should they fall short, though it has been stressed the rule adjustment is not intended to grant bigger transfer fees and player wages.

Are the PSR changes a good move?

In terms of improving affordability of operational costs and behind-the-scenes staff wages, this action is a positive one.

For both the running of facilities day-to-day and paying employees, there tends to be a gulf inside football clubs between what and who are cheap to employ and what stings the pockets a bit more.

The supposed backlash to this comes almost universally from those in the Premier League, who will tell you they have had to toe the line far more than previously – take Nottingham Forest and Everton’s points deductions as examples.

The fact of the matter for West Brom is that they don’t know if they’ll be a second-tier club next season or not, simply speaking. And this move would give the club a small cushion should they not return to the Premier League this summer.

Albion look to be preparing for an overhaul of the squad, although outgoings are likely to happen before too much money is spent on incomings. A number of West Brom’s rumoured incomings could be free transfers.

It looks as if the Baggies are heading into the summer window with some financial practicality in any case.
