West Brom ready to buy title-winning defender Eric Smith after ‘successful season’
West Brom are looking to strengthen their defence with the signing of St. Pauli defender Eric Smith, according to Sport Bladet.
The Swedish publication’s report [7 June] claims that Albion are impressed by Smith’s season as St. Pauli won the 2. Bundesliga championship, earning promotion to the German top flight.
Smith played 26 league matches as his side stormed to the title, earning the 27-year-old a maiden Sweden call-up, from which he has had to withdraw due to personal reasons.
It is understood that West Brom face competition from Leeds United for Smith’s signature.
West Brom in for Smith to bolster defence
Albion prided themselves on a stern defensive record in the Championship during 2023-24, as Carlos Corberan made his side hard to beat.
A settled back line was a huge reason for that, with some Baggies fans worried at the fact that centre-half pairing Kyle Bartley and Cedric Kipre are yet to sign new contracts with their existing deals expiring this month.
Kipre in particular has attracted a number of suitors, and is said to be appealed by a move to Trabzonspor [Taka Gazete], who have qualified for the Europa League for next season.
Smith’s career is on an upward curve – the 6’3” centre-back, also adept in a defensive midfield area, appears somewhat of a late bloomer and was unfortunate to have to withdraw from Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Sweden squad, on the verge of his full debut.
Having spent time in Belgium and Norway alongside his own nation, Smith has appeared to find a footballing home in Germany and with the prospect of Bundesliga football awaiting him, West Brom may have to persuade the Swede with a strong financial incentive to come to The Hawthorns.
