Josh Griffiths set for West Brom loan exit after new Abion transfer development

West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths is set to complete a loan move away from The Hawthorns after new transfer developments, according to Lewis Cox.

The Express and Star journalist reported on Tuesday (9 July) that the Baggies are now hunting for a temporary move for the 22-year-old as they close in on a deal for former Derby keeper Joe Wildsmith this summer.

Wildsmith departed Pride Park as a free agent at the end of last season having failed to agree on new terms with The Rams and now appears set to become Carlos Corberan’s third summer addition.

Will Josh Griffiths exit West Brom after new transfer update at The Hawthorns?

Griffiths may be a bright prospect and that was reflected by the Baggies’ decision to hand him a new contract, but he needs to be playing regular first-team football having spent last season rooted to the bench.

Barring the odd appearance in cup competitions, the 22-year-old was forced to play second fiddle to Alex Palmer for the majority of the campaign.

While that was unlikely to change this season, the signing of Wildsmith will push him further down the pecking order which simply cannot be good for his development as he looks to claim the number one shirt in the future.

Hopefully, several League One clubs will be eager to take the young keeper on loan for the coming season given he has previously impressed during temporary spells with the likes of Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City.

Ultimately, this switch could be a blessing in disguise for both West Brom and Griffiths himself. He gets to play more regularly in the coming year and Albion don’t have to worry about keeping him happy as second choice.

Now the Baggies simply have to find a club willing to take the 22-year-old on loan for the next 12 months, the sooner that can be sorted the better as it will give Griffiths the time to settle in with his new side.
