Ex-West Brom player jailed for two years after representing himself at Birmingham Crown Court

Former West Brom defender James Hurst has been jailed for two years for harassing his ex-girlfriend and her family in a row over his child, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported via its online edition on 31 July that the 32-year-old “bombarded” his ex-partner with abusive calls, texts as well as emails.

The Englishman represented himself at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, 31 August, where he made counter-allegations against his former partner, stating that she was physically abusive to him and stole money from his account.

Former West Brom defender James Hurst’s professional career likely to be impacted

Despite Hurst’s claims of media coverage harming his career and his attempts to justify his actions, the court emphasised the seriousness of his offences and the need to protect his ex-partner and her family.

Looking ahead, Hurst’s career as a professional footballer is likely to be severely impacted by his incarceration.

He represented the Baggies from 2010-2013, making his senior debut in December 2010 against Ipswich Town which ended in a 1-0 defeat at Portman Road.

His claims of having an offer from another club contingent on his release before the season starts indicate the potential loss of this opportunity.

Additionally, his previous convictions for threatening and abusive behaviour [Daily Mail] and the current charges against him may further hinder his prospects in the sport.

Hurst’s admission of seeking help from the Professional Football Association for transitioning into a non-sporting job suggests an awareness of the challenges he may face in continuing his career.
