Alex Palmer sends message as West Brom agree terms for Hawthorns transfer

West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer has reacted on social media after the club agreed terms on a Premier League transfer for Conor Townsend.

Townsend, 31, leaves The Hawthorns after a six-year innings with the club, returning to the top flight with Ipswich Town for a fee of around £750,000 [John Percy, 31 July].

Palmer took to Townsend’s farewell post on Instagram [1 August] to deliver his own well-wishes to the left-back.

“Will miss you mate! All the very best,” the stopper commented, followed by a blue heart emoji.

West Brom must add to squad

Whilst West Brom fans are content with recouping a fee just short of £5m as a collective for Townsend, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Okay Yokuslu, the squad has now become light.

Carlos Corberan needs to be supplied with the adequate funds to strengthen in key areas, with just 19 first-team players now currently on the books – albeit with Devante Cole already replacing the outgoing Thomas-Asante.

A host of experienced players have left the club following a steady season last year which culminated in a play-off semi-final, something which at present seems a far cry with the current squad in place.

PSR concerns are making Shilen Patel hesitant [Chris Lepkowski, 31 July] to splash the cash during the transfer window, with defender Torbjorn Heggen the only player so far signed for a fee (£500,000).

A little over a week remains before Albion travel to London to take on QPR in their 2024-25 season opener, and it is likely the entire first-team squad will fit on the coach south.
