Carlos Corberan exit claim made by BBC commentator, fans must be understanding

BBC commentator David Law believes Shilen Patel will already be aware a succession plan must be in place for when Carlos Corberan leaves West Brom.

Corberan superbly guided Albion to the Championship play-offs last season, where they fell to defeat against Southampton in the semi-finals, and will be aiming for something similar this campaign.

The Spaniard was linked with Leicester City and Burnley earlier this summer, and while those clubs ultimately appointed other managers, there is a general acceptance Corberan could be nabbed by a Premier League side down the line.

In a thread posted on his personal X account, West Brom fan Law praised the work Patel has done to date, despite many fans being frustrated at the transfer activity at The Hawthorns this summer.

“I think Shilen Patel will prove to be the most important ‘signing’ Albion have made in a generation,” Law said.

“I’m guilty of getting excited about people like Jed Wallace, John Swift and many more over recent years. Good players, good guys, but who will be with us only a short time …

“The way forward for clubs like ours, particularly without parachute payments, is through moving players on at the right time, not getting too attached, and bringing others in with resale value.

“Mr Patel is eyeing the long term. This could take a while, so thank goodness… In Carlos Corberan I feel we have the ideal manager to carry out what Shilen Patel is building.

“He can get results in the short term whilst building for the long. But even if/when Corberan needs to be dispensable. If he goes, we need obvious replacements lined up…

“I believe Shilen Patel gets this at every level. We will find some gems, and others won’t work. But we’ll keep building. It’s on us as fans to be patient and see that it’s a long term process and the only way.

“He saved this club, and I will forever be grateful.”

Shilen Patel has West Brom’s best interests at heart

Having been scorned during previous regimes, West Brom fans can be forgiven for being wary of Patel’s business to date.

Losing three key players in such a short space of time certainly did not help in terms of the mood around The Hawthorns.

However, bringing in cash for Brandon Thomas-Asante, Okay Yokuslu and Conor Townsend was very much best for the club.

Supporters would love to see the squad replenished, and that will hopefully still be the case before the window closes.

Indeed, the signings of Gianluca Frabotta and Lewis Dobbin, the latter on loan from Aston Villa, came out the blue and are both shrewd deals.

Patel is trying to keep Albion financially stable after the mess he inherited while at the same time ensuring Corberan has a competitive squad to work with.

Corberan’s future will constantly be a fear for West Brom supporters, but as long as the Baggies are performing, the Spaniard will have far less reason to want to quit.

Let’s just hope Patel can bring in another player or two – even if on loan or a free transfer – to ensure Corberan can have another crack at Premier League promotion.
