Carlos Corberan shares priority on Caleb Taylor in new West Brom verdict
Carlos Corberan has dropped a new hint about Caleb Taylor’s future at West Brom for the 2024/25 campaign.
The 21-year-old centre-back spent last season out on loan with Bolton Wanderers but could only make seven appearances in League One due to injury, therefore being unable to break into the team.
Taylor has made just nine first-team appearances for the Baggies since coming through the academy, and while he is set to start against Fleetwood in the EFL Cup on Tuesday 13 August, West Brom may still send him on loan.
Speaking to the Express and Star on Tuesday (13 August), the Spaniard said: “We always need to evaluate and re-evaluate the situation, because maybe what I expect today can change tomorrow because the situation changes. Or maybe one week ago it can change.
“I can tell you what Caleb needs – Caleb needs minutes. That’s why we loaned him in January. Unfortunately, the minutes he needed in January he couldn’t achieve because he had an injury and when he was fit he couldn’t be involved in Bolton’s last part of the season.
“So it means his situation didn’t change from January. He still needs minutes. Depending on how we can manage the situation we will make the decision, but my priority is he needs minutes before he can be ready to help the club in the Championship.”
West Brom to loan Caleb Taylor back out?
The Baggies will have certainly hoped for a much more positive loan spell after Taylor arrived at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, but it wasn’t to be for the youngster.
While the defender looks set to be given an opportunity in the EFL Cup, he is in desperate need of valuable minutes on the pitch, and this is unlikely to happen at The Hawthorns.
Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi look to be the preferred centre-back partnership, having teamed up well during the 3-1 victory over QPR on Saturday 10 August, with Paddy McNair also signed in the same position.

Some fans may be disappointed if another loan for the 21-year-old is the case this summer, with the hope of him breaking into the first team, but it could be too much of a risk, especially after some of the recent outgoings at The Hawthorns.
Corberan is extremely experienced and will know what he’s doing when it comes to the younger generation at West Brom. The certainty around Taylor should provide some confidence.
