Mikey Johnston set for £2.5m Celtic exit after West Brom loan
Celtic have agreed to sell former West Brom loanee Mikey Johnston to Sheffield United for £2.5million, according to Alan Nixon.
The Sun journalist reported on his Patreon page (27 August) that the Blades have agreed a £2.5million fee with Celtic for Johnston, beating Albion’s fellow Championship side Burnley to his signature.
Johnston scored seven goals and added two assists in 20 appearances on loan for the Baggies last season, but his spell at The Hawthorns ended with their play-off semi-final defeat to Southampton in May.
West Brom set to rue missing out on Mikey Johnston transfer
Given Johnston is making a move to a side expected to be amongst the teams fighting it out in the automatic promotion race, Baggies fans will know exactly what Sheffield United are getting.
Nine goal contributions in less than half a season suggests that Johnston’s numbers could explode over the course of a full campaign, and that could be bad news for Albion’s own hopes of promotion.

The Blades are no strangers to the financial worries currently being experienced by the Baggies [Kieran Maguire, 8 August], but with the weight of Premier League parachute payments behind them, they’ve been able to seal this transfer.
The 2024/25 campaign will be Albion’s first in the Championship without these payments since their top-flight relegation in 2021, restricting their ability to return with big-money offers for the likes of Johnston.
Regardless of whether Johnston had moved to Burnley or Bramall Lane this summer [Pete O’Rourke, 22 August], the Baggies will now be going up against a promotion-chasing side with a player who has recently excelled at this level.
In other West Brom news, the club could receive up to £1.6million after one a former player completed his Premier League move.
