Tom Cannon heads for Midlands medical as West Brom transfer race concludes
West Brom have missed out on the loan signing of Tom Cannon as the Leicester City forward heads for a medical at Stoke City, according to John Percy.
The Telegraph journalist posted on X (30 August) to report that Cannon is on his way for a medical at the ahead of a season-long loan to Stoke, describing the move as a “big coup” for Albion’s Midlands rivals.
Percy stated that Stoke’s competition for Cannon’s signature included “at least half the Championship”, with the Baggies having registered their own interest in the Irish international late last month [Sun on Sunday, 28 July].
Albion were one of just three clubs, alongside Sheffield United and Stoke, reported to have been keen on the move at that point, but interest has escalated in the weeks since with Cannon deciding on the latter.
West Brom miss out on Tom Cannon in sour end to transfer window
The Baggies undoubtedly saved their headline signing of the transfer window right until the very last, and while they’re yet to officially announce it, that’s the £3million return of Mikey Johnston from Celtic.
Further additions in the wake of Johnston’s permanent signing with the club have been deemed unlikely [Lewis Cox, 29 August], but missing out on Cannon does highlight that there are still holes to fill in the side.
Carlos Corberan had been keen to add another striker to his squad before the transfer deadline passes, with last season’s first choice Brandon Thomas-Asante exiting for Coventry City.
Mo Faal has since left for a switch to Wrexham, leaving Albion down on numbers in attack regardless of the output that the likes of Johnston and exciting young winger Tom Fellows are expected to provide.
Corberan did sound out striking options at other Championship clubs, but turned his attention away from the likes of Will Keane [George Hodgson, 21 August], who has since signed a new contract with Preston North End.
Stoke signing Cannon in the wake of a 2-1 home loss to none other than the Baggies will give Corberan food for thought, and it remains to be seen if the Spaniard will urge the club to make a last-gap addition.
