West Brom in talks for last-minute Mason Holgate transfer with Everton
West Brom are in talks to sign Everton centre-back Mason Holgate on loan ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Pete O’Rourke.
The journalist reported via his personal X account [30 August] that the Baggies are attempting to push through a late deal for the defender before the transfer window shuts at 11pm.
Holgate has previously claimed that his loan spell at The Hawthorns during the 2018/19 campaign was the “best thing” he’s ever done, as per the Daily Star, and could be set to rejoin the Championship side this summer.
West Brom to seal late deal for Everton defender Mason Holgate?
With just minutes remaining until the transfer window slams shut at 11pm, there are certainly worse players that Carlos Corberan could add to his roster this summer.
The new Championship campaign has started on a positive note for the Baggies, claiming wins over QPR and Stoke City as well as drawing against Leeds United.
However, following Cedric Kipre’s exit earlier in the transfer window, Corberan has been left with an ageing backline of Kyle Bartley, Semi Ajayi and Patrick McNair.
Caleb Taylor’s loan move to Wycombe Wanderers [Official website] has meant that the manager has even fewer options in defence this season, and Holgate could provide adequate cover instead.
There is no hiding from the fact that his 2023/24 campaign was a horrible one in his career, being sent out on loan to Southampton before being recalled and sent back out to Sheffield United.
Neither spell was beneficial for any parties, having made seven appearances for the Saints while falling down the pecking order, and receiving a red card in one of 10 appearances for the Blades.
Everton are clearly open to allowing the 27-year-old to depart this summer, and the Baggies could be at the front of the line to bring him back to his former glory and relive his West Brom days.
