Carlos Corberan tastes transfer regret at West Brom after £1m Sorba Thomas development
West Brom had an opportunity to sign Wales talent Sorba Thomas before he sealed a loan move to Nantes this summer.
The Baggies were weighing up a potential transfer during the summer transfer window, as per Sky Sports [18 July], with Huddersfield Town being relegated to League One last season.
It is understood that the 25-year-old could have been available for just £1million, according to The Sun – a player who had worked with the West Brom manager during their time together at the John Smith’s Stadium.
A deal never came to fruition at The Hawthorns, however, and Carlos Corberan will now be kicking himself after not pushing harder to add him to the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Thomas was handed a start by Craig Bellamy as Wales drew 0-0 with Turkey on Friday 6 August, and while they were unable to hit the back of the net, the winger was awarded Man of the Match [Official Cymru X account].
West Brom to regret Sorba Thomas transfer decision
The Welshman is far too good for League One football, hence his move away from the Terriers this season, and Corberan would have welcomed him to The Hawthorns with open arms.
The two have worked together before, which would automatically give both an initial benefit to the move, and the player’s statistics speak for themselves.
Despite Huddersfield struggling in the Championship last season, the 25-year-old still bagged four goals and nine assists in 41 appearances, improving upon his zero goals and eight assists from the season before.
Thomas has incredible service into the box, and given how in form Josh Maja is for the Baggies at the beginning of this campaign, there is no doubt that he would have flourished under Corberan.
Of course, the manager is unlikely to be looking back at past decisions, but this one will strike a nerve with the Spaniard, especially following his Man of the Match performance against Turkey.
