Irish media reacts to what West Brom duo Jayson Molumby and Mikey Johnston did v Greece
Irish media have reacted to West Brom duo Jayson Molumby and Mikey Johnston’s lively cameos on the international stage.
Molumby and Johnston shone during the little time they were on the pitch after being brought on as substitutes in the 73rd minute of Ireland’s 2-0 defeat to Greece on Sunday (13 October).
Assessing Molumby’s performance, the Irish Football Blog wrote via their X account: “Molumby has been very very good since coming on. Should’ve started instead of [Jason] Knight in my opinion.”
Irish sports outlet Ball.ie gave the 25-year-old a 5.5 rating and lauded his performance, writing: “A really bright cameo, Molumby saw plenty of the ball and did well to spread the ball out wide.”
They also reserved praise for Johnston, scoring him 5/10 and writing: “Did well to take on his man and force Greece back.”
RTE, meanwhile, rated Molumby’s cameo 6/10, with their review reading: “Replaced Knight in a more or less like-for-like swap. Kept the ball ticking over around the middle during Ireland’s best period of the game.”
While the Irish broadcasters gave Johnston the same score, they wrote: “The winger has often provided a spark off the bench during his time in green. Didn’t quite work out for the tricky West Brom man here.”
The 42 thought the West Brom duo were good off the bench, writing: “Jayson Molumby, Festy Ebosele, Jack Taylor and Mikey Johnston all made positive contributions when they came on.”
Meanwhile, Sunday World‘s assessment read: “Festy Ebosele and Jack Taylor were the first men in, contributing instantly to Ireland’s best spell of the game with Mikey Johnston and Jayson Molumby also looking lively.”
West Brom duo Jayson Molumby and Mikey Johnston get limited action on international duty
Molumby and Johnston would be disappointed to get limited playing time for Ireland during this international break.
They remained unused substitutes in the 2-1 defeat against Finland on Thursday (10 October) and came on when the team were already trailing against Greece.
Molumby has now suffered 2-0 defeats in his last three appearances for Ireland and looked particularly frustrated against Greece last month.
As for Johnston, the disappointment follows a poor performance in West Brom colours as he struggled to impress in the stalemate against Millwall on 5 October.

The duo will undoubtedly be keen to put all those behind them when they return to training with the Baggies this week.
They will have a chance to help the team bounce back from their three-game winless run when they visit Oxford United on Saturday (19 October).
It is worth noting that Molumby has one goal to his name this season, while Johnston has yet to score since joining from Celtic permanently in the summer.
