Don Goodman astonished at 'bonkers' West Brom and Leicester City news he's heard

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman cannot believe West Brom are being linked with a £10million move for Leicester City forward Tom Cannon.

The Sun on Sunday reported on 13 October that Albion could rekindle their interest in summer target Cannon, who is currently on loan with Stoke City, when the window reopens in January.

Leicester supposedly hope to recall the 21-year-old and then offload him to another club on a loan-to-buy basis, with the Premier League side valuing him at £10million.

West Brom would not have to pay that eight-figure sum unless they are promoted, but Goodman cannot get his head around that figure for a club that has struggled to pay minimal transfer fees in recent times.

"The first thing that comes to my mind is to ask myself 'how on earth are West Bromwich Albion going to afford that fee?' It's impossible," Goodman told West Brom News.

"It's not even really worth talking about because they don't have that money. He's on loan at Stoke and this talk is disruptive. I don't see it as even a starter given the transfer fee.

"Even if they did have £10m, for them to spend it on one player would be absolutely bonkers - one of the most bonkers decisions they could possibly make. It's hard for me to believe, really."

Tom Cannon deal would be big coup for West Brom

Spending £10m on Cannon, even if West Brom are a Premier League club seven months from now, would indeed be a bold move.

The way Albion chiefs will see it, though, is it is a price worth paying if Cannon fires the Baggies to promotion in the second half of this season.

The former Everton player - who would likely be open to the switch - has showed he can find the net at this level with Preston North End and now Stoke City.

If a deal can be negotiated with Leicester on that aforementioned loan-to-buy basis, which would only be triggered if promotion is achieved, it could yet make sense.
