Carlos Corberan to make no-brainer Mikey Johnston decision ahead of West Brom v Luton Town
Carlos Corberan must be cut-throat when it comes to Mikey Johnston before West Brom face Luton Town on Friday (1 November).
The 25-year-old’s return to The Hawthorns this summer was greeted by a lot of excitement, having impressed during his loan spell, but he has been nothing short of disappointing so far.
After bagging seven goals and an assist in 18 league matches last term, he has started just twice in the Championship, coming on as a substitute in six more games, yet to hit the back of the net.
If that was not already enough to convince the manager to drop him, his performance during the 0-0 stalemate with Cardiff City on Saturday 26 October should be the final straw.
Of course, Corberan will be disappointed with the entire display at The Hawthorns, with their winless streak extending to six games, but it is difficult not to highlight him in particular.
Mikey Johnston continues to disappoint after West Brom v Cardiff City
Corberan is desperate for his star players to step up and single-handedly claim a victory for the Baggies, but Johnston was far from being that man during his 71 minutes on the pitch.
During that time, he had three shots, none of which reached the goal, completed 50 per cent of his dribbles and long balls, and accurately delivered zero per cent of his crosses (0/5) [FotMob].
He was also caught offside twice, adding more frustration to the attack, being dribbled past once, and winning just 33 per cent of his ground duels against a team just one point above the relegation zone.
Replaced with 20 minutes remaining, Tom Fellows also struggled to offer something, and while he has dropped in form, he is much more likely to offer an attacking outlet for the Baggies.
The 21-year-old ranks in the top 88 percentile for assists and the top 91 percentile for progressive carries [FBref], so if anyone can help the Baggies get back to winning ways, it is probably him.
