Carlos Corberan must axe Alex Mowatt from West Brom starting XI after what he did v Hull

Carlos Corberan must axe Alex Mowatt from his West Brom starting XI after what he did in their 2-1 Championship win against Hull City on Sunday.

Since arriving from Barnsley the midfielder has been a first-team regular in the Baggies’ squad but looking at his performances over the last couple of games, he’s left a lot to be desired.

Mowatt is supposed to be one of the creative architects of the team but instead, he’s very much felt like a passenger.

Why Alex Mowatt needs to be dropped from the West Brom starting XI

The 2024/25 season has been a fairly strange one for the Baggies and their fans, it started off better than most expected with some even believing that Corberan’s men would get one of the two precious automatic promotion spots.

Fast-forward to now, however, and things are looking quite different. They still find themselves in the top six and currently sit fifth in the Championship but if they want to continue on this upward trajectory, Corberan is going to have to make some changes within his squad, starting with Mowatt.

The Baggies are going through an injury crisis at the moment but one area of the pitch they have plenty of depth in is the centre of the park.

John Swift is the most likely option to replace the former Barnsley man as both have the same playstyle and similar assets.

His form hasn’t been up to scratch either but despite that, he still feels like the better option.

In their clash against Hull on 10 November, Mowatt struggled to press and be his usual dominant self, he also offered very little defensively and Corberan might want to consider a change in the engine room as a result.

If the Spaniard wants to break his team back into those top two spots, changes need to be made as soon as possible to give them the best chance.

In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan may have to have a word with Tom Fellows after his recent form.
