Carlos Corberan will be secretly thrilled at ‘disaster’ for West Brom ace

Carlos Corberan has been dealing with multiple defensive injuries at West Brom, with Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley on the sidelines.

The Baggies have relied on Mason Holgate and Torbjorn Heggem’s partnership over the last few weeks, and both of them are now away on international duty with their respective nations.

Holgate started for the Reggae Boyz at home in their 1-0 defeat against the USA on 14 November in the CONCACAF Nations League, picking up a red card in the 86th minute.

Jamaican media wasn’t too pleased with the 28-year-old’s display in the loss, with Jamaica Gleaner [14 November] writing: “A couple of clumsy challenges spelt disaster for Mason Holgate, who was sent to the showers for the second of those in the 86th.”

Holgate is now set to miss his country’s next fixture away in America on 19 November, something Corberan will secretly be thrilled about.

Mason Holgate critical for injury-hit West Brom

The Hawthorns faithful will be delighted that the centre-back won’t be at risk of picking up a knock in Jamaica’s next game.

West Brom have seen their fair share of injuries this season, with Ajayi picking up an issue with his hamstring after the game against Cardiff City in the Championship on 26 October and Bartley missing the last five matches.

Holgate and Heggem have held their own at the back, and the Baggies got their first win in nine fixtures with a 2-1 victory over Hull City on 10 November.

It remains to be seen how long Bartley will take to recover, but for now, Corberan has a tried and tested pairing ready to take on Norwich City on 23 November.

And the fact that Holgate can’t get injured playing for Jamaica will probably be a blessing for the boss.
