Irish media react to West Brom ace Jason Molumby display in Finland win – ‘Under the cosh’, ‘Brilliant’

West Brom ace Jason Molumby delivered a “brilliant” performance as Irish national media reacted to his performance in the 1-0 win against Finland.

The 25-year-old played the final 15 minutes for the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday night [14 November], helping his country see out victory at the Aviva Stadium.

While Baggies teammate Mikey Johnston was in the limelight for assisting Evan Ferguson for the decisive goal, Molumby played a vital role for his side and helped his side retain control of proceedings as Finland chased the equaliser.

Irish broadcaster Raidio Teilifis Eireann [14 November] awarded him a modest 6/10 rating for his efforts, writing: “Helped shore up midfield late in the game. He could have been given more time given the need when Ireland were under the cosh.”

Whereas Irish website Balls.ie [14 November] felt his outing deserved a lower 5.5/10 writing but still recognised his efforts, writing: “Showed brilliant composure in playing out from the back with nine minutes remaining. Pressed energetically high up the pitch in the dying moments.”

West Brom will be relieved Jason Molumby is managing his minutes

Molumby has been ever-present in the West Brom midfield alongside Alex Mowatt when available, he has not been without his injury woes at The Hawthorns this season.

Carlos Corberan will be relieved to see his minutes managed on international duty and even more so, to see his star man offering an impact from the bench against a tough Finland side.

The Baggies finally ended an eight-match winless run in the Championship with a 2-1 win against Hull City, the international break perhaps comes at the worst possible time for Corberan with his side back to winning ways but also provides a much-needed respite to assess the situation.

West Brom have remained in the hunt for a playoff finish despite, the run of form and, stands with a chance to salvage their automatic promotion hopes with only six points separating the side from the Championship summit.

Molumby will undoubtedly play a vital role in helping Albion embark on a resurgence up the league table, as he continues his stellar form with the national side but needs his teammates to step up.

The midfielder has arguably played his role to perfection despite what the results might suggest, the Baggies have kept four clean sheets across the barren spell and as a defensive midfielder – one clean sheet every other game is a remarkable return.

West Brom cannot afford to drop more points and with Molumby in fine form alongside compatriot Johnston and Josh Maja back among the goals, hopefully, this will be the turning point for a promotion push.
