West Brom outcast ready to tell Corberan he wants to be first choice in starting XI

Josh Griffiths believes he could be ready to fight for his spot in the West Brom starting XI as his Bristol Rovers loan spell continues.

The 23-year-old has played a starring role in League One since leaving The Hawthorns, starting all 15 of the Rovers’ league matches to date and keeping five clean sheets.

Griffiths has only made 13 senior appearances for the Baggies since graduating from the club’s academy, and with Alex Palmer the first choice under Carlos Corberan, he has a difficult decision to make.

Speaking to the Bristol Post on Friday (22 November), Griffiths said: “I think at some point I’ve got to sort of stamp my feet down and say, ‘Look, I want to fight for my position.’

“But that’s a conversation I need to have with myself and yeah, I’m not super young anymore, not old. So ultimately that is my end goal, I want to be West Brom’s number one. So yeah, that’s probably a decision I need to make.”

Joshua Griffiths to take first-choice goalkeeper role at West Brom?

Griffiths will feel he has what it takes to be a first-choice goalkeeper in the Championship as he continues to prove himself in League One at the Memorial Stadium.

The 23-year-old has clearly found it difficult to break into the starting XI at The Hawthorns, especially under Corberan, and that could continue considering how Palmer has performed in recent seasons.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper has 88 senior appearances for the Baggies since cementing his spot in 2022, keeping 36 clean sheets over the last three Championship seasons.

It seems like an incredibly difficult task to dislodge the current number-one choice at The Hawthorns, but at the age he is now, Griffiths will believe he can do exactly that once his loan spell returns.
