Corberan to pull Mowatt aside for talks ahead of West Brom v Sheffield United

Carlos Corberan has an extremely difficult task of leading his West Brom side into battle against Sheffield United on Sunday.

The Baggies will be looking to claim just their second win in the last 11 matches, having only beaten Hull City 2-1 amongst a plethora of frustrating draws.

This form has seen Corberan’s side slip out of the Championship play-offs and into 7th place after a very bright start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Ahead of welcoming the Blades to the Hawthorns on 8 December, the manager needs to ensure all of his players are firing on all cylinders and fighting for all three points against the promotion hopefuls.

However, there is certainly the potential for some players to fight too hard for all three points, which is exactly why Corberan needs to talk with Alex Mowatt before the Championship clash.

Alex Mowatt at risk of suspension in West Brom v Sheffield United

With 18 games played, the Baggies midfielder is just one game away from reaching the threshold to avoid five yellow cards, having been walking a tightrope since his fourth caution in October.

The 29-year-old has played seven times since that moment, and while he has shown few signs of receiving that dreaded fifth yellow card that would see him suspended, it is still a concern.

It would be just the Baggies’ luck that Mowatt would receive a suspension with his final chance before the reset, so it is down to Corberan whether he sticks with the midfielder or leaves him out.

With a difficult Championship clash against the Blades, it would be a risky decision to leave one of the club’s best players this season out of the team, but he could then miss the game against Coventry City.

Corberan certainly has a dilemma on his hands before Sunday’s clash at the Hawthorns, and if he is going to trust Mowatt not to do something stupid, he must play a very cautious game of football.
