Frank Lampard has given West Brom excuse already v Coventry

Frank Lampard has already given West Brom an excuse ahead of their game against Coventry City.

The Baggies welcome the Sky Blues to The Hawthorns on Wednesday [11 December] as they look to break their run of draws which now equals 10 from their last 11 games.

Carlos Corberan’s side equalised in the 62nd minute on Sunday [8 December] to get a point against Sheffield United.

Meanwhile, Lampard’s side come into this game having got their first win in five on Saturday [7 December] against Millwall.

Speaking on to Coventry City’s official media on 7 December, Lampard gave the Baggies an early excuse going into the game as he said: “West Brom play tomorrow [Sheffield United], we need to rest.

“We need to not get too far ahead of ourselves because it’s one win and there’s a lot of work to do. So it’s important to rest, we’ll prep for the game on Wednesday, that’s the rigours of the Championship for you.”

Carlos Corberan needs a win for West Brom

Although the Baggies are picking up points and not losing games which is a positive, the run of draws is now starting to become a bit of a negative.

Corberan’s side has started slipping down the table and has fallen out of the play-offs, now sitting eighth in the table, two points away from sixth.

Going into this game, Coventry only have one win in their last five games and therefore, if West Brom are looking towards promotion this season, this would be an ideal game to win as a way to try and break the cycle.

However, the opposition manager has already given the Baggies an excuse not to be as sharp due to their one day less rest between the weekend’s game and Wednesday.

Nevertheless, the 41-year-old cannot afford to think like this at the moment. He is popular at The Hawthorns and rightly so, but football is a fickle game and that could then turn sour if the hope of promotion starts to fall out of reach.

Lampard is right that it is a difficult league and currently games are coming thick and fast but excuses won’t mean a lot at the end of the season if the Baggies aren’t in the play-offs.
