Frank Lampard makes West Brom admission to Sky Sports right after Coventry loss

Frank Lampard praised the foundations of the West Brom performance as the Baggies secured a 2-0 win over his Coventry City side on Wednesday.

West Brom picked up only their second win in their last 14 games on 11 December with a 2-0 victory against Coventry.

An opening goal from Alex Mowatt left commentators stunned before Karl Grant made sure of the three points in the second half, with Lampard making an “important” admission on West Brom after the game.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the clash (12 December), the ex-England international said: “They’re a strong team and a well-drilled outfit, a physically strong team. It’s important in this league to be based on that. It’s something we have to improve ourselves.

“They create problems because of the way they play with good possession and they get a lot of people up against your back line. Sometimes they can try and push you back but we dealt with it pretty well.

“Although it’s been a funny period for them, they’ve been robust and they don’t lose games. It’s a big strength.”

West Brom need to find the winning formula

Arguments will be made as to whether the Baggies deserved the three points but all that matters is that they managed to get them, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Under Carlos Corberan, West Brom have become an incredibly difficult outfit to beat but a lack of cutting edge has made them far too easy to defend against and Wednesday’s encounter wasn’t particularly different.

The difference on the night was that the Baggies took their chances when they arrived and quite remarkably, it wasn’t by Josh Maja who was hooked halfway through the encounter.

They still need to improve massively going forward but the foundations set at the back give them a great shot at tasting success this season but only if they address that issue.

Ultimately, winning games is what gets you promoted and especially during the festive period, it is vitally important that you pick up as many points as possible no matter how you get them.
