Luton set to sign player released by West Brom in summer

Luton Town are ready to sign Erik Pieters on a free transfer following his summer exit from West Brom, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon [19 December] that the defender has been without a club since leaving The Hawthorns, having taken time away from football due to his wife’s cancer diagnosis.

It is understood, however, that the 36-year-old is clear to resume his footballing career and will help Rob Edwards’ side fight in what has been a tough Championship campaign for the Hatters.

Luton Town to sign Erik Pieters after West Brom exit

There was not too much reaction when Pieters left The Hawthorns during the summer, with his contract expiring at the end of the 2023/24 season.

However, with the Hatters really struggling for form this season, sitting 19th in the division after 21 matches and only five points above the relegation spots, he could certainly help.

At 36 years of age, with experience across Europe with PSV Eindhoven, Stoke City, Burnley and the Baggies, and even winning 18 caps for the Netherlands, he can add leadership to any changing room.

He would even be a relatively helpful figure for Carlos Corebran right now, who has been suffering from a lack of centre-back options due to a range of different injuries.

Although Kyle Bartley has returned to the starting XI, Semi Ajayi and Paddy McNair are both still unavailable and the leaking of goals has been detrimental over the last few weeks.

The Baggies’ form recently, drawing 10 of their last 13 league matches, Corberan’s side have fallen out of the Championship play-off spots, which has been very frustrating after such a positive start to the season.

While Pieters would not change things overnight at The Hawthorns, his experience and knowledge is invaluable, and Edwards will certainly know this when he arrives at Kenilworth Road.
